Some might say that Martha Stewart is taking her famed craftiness a step too
far. The television personality recently revealed her love of Christian
Louboutin shoes but, of course, with her own little Martha Stewart twist. In an
interview yesterday with InStyle magazine Stewart revealed that she paints the
red soles of her Louboutin heels black.
“I don’t like them red, even though they’re his trademark,” Stewart told the
magazine, pointing to her metallic high heels. “But he doesn’t mind. He said
it’s okay if I do that — I asked him!”
christian louboutin has been using red soles on his shoes since 1997 and
trademarked the look in 2008. The red soles have been controversial though. Last
year the French footwear designer sued Yves Saint Laurent for infringing on the
red trademark. The first time before a judge the case was dismissed on the
grounds that Louboutin couldn’t claim ownership of an entire color. Louboutin
appealed. In September the case was revisited. It was finally decided that red
soles do belong to Louboutin but only under specific circumstances. Both
Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent claimed victory in the case.

With Christian Louboutin heels retailing for upwards of a thousand dollars
the average consumer would be aghast at the thought of altering them in any way.
But with an estimated worth of over $650 million dollars Martha Stewart is not
the average consumer. Louboutin is one of the most celebrated shoe designers in
history. He was recently the subject of a retrospective at London’s Design
Museum. Louboutin made headlines recently for his creation of a Cinderella
inspired glass slipper high heel created just in time for the re-release of the
Disney Blu-Ray film
